As a society we're still hooked on disposable diapers. Some hospitals are making the big switch to cloth, including a coalition of thirteen in the Metro Toronto area alone. But, regrettably, many day-care centers and maternity wards continue to insist on disposables. And even if demand fell immediately by 50 percent, ten billion diapers would still make their way to landfill sites every year.

The pressure to jettison disposables may well intensify when our overburdened dumps are full, and households are forced to pay a stiff penalty for generating extra garbage. This type of surtax is already being levied in some North American cities—Edmonton is one example—where landfill space is rapidly running out. Perhaps that's when Toronto council member Elizabeth Amer's advice about cutting consumption will really hit home, marking the beginning of the end of The Disposable Diaper Era, as the late twentieth century will surely be known to future generations.
