Prefold

Somebody eventually thought up the idea to prefold the material so that it would be thicker, more absorbent, and require a little less work to get on baby. Prefold diapers basically come in two "weights":

  1. the standard gauze

  2. birdeye weight,

which is found in any chain or children's store, and diaper service quality, a heavy, durable weight and thickness, available through the use of a diaper service or purchased though specialty mail-order.

It is usually of twill --- a dense, tight weave -- with several absorbent inner layers. Some manufacturers, in an effort to make "regular" diapers heftier, put polyester fluff in the inner layers. Polyester does not absorb moisture.

Often diaper service or premium diapers have a terry cloth layer or layers either inside or on the outside of the diaper.

Prefolds are also made in all-flannel, birdseye, and green cotton or unbleached varieties. These are undoubtedly the most widely available type through any source.
