How To Wash Diaper In Places Of Hard Water?

Before you decide whether your diaper is affected by hard water, you would need to first check if the water is hard or not. This is done by several methods:

  1. Agitate some soap in a pail or sink full of water. If it does not lather up, then you will have high chance that it is hard water after all. This is because soap will make a lot of bubbles in soft water.

  2. If your clothes look dingy or hard or scrathy and you experience dull hair looking, this is also another sign of hard water.

  3. You may also engage water company for a test to double confirm on the hardness of the water.

Hard water also means your diaper will have minerals residues on it, which means you will have hard time with detergent build-up problem.

You may overcome it by using either one of the ways here:

  1. Try adding some Calgon Water Softener or RLR during the wash cycle and proceed as normal. This can be found in department store.

  2. Add 1/2 - 1 cup of white vinegar in the final rinse cycle to soften your diapers and remove odors. However in some cases it may worsen the case, so it also depends on how much minerals is buildup. If the diapers get real stinky, stop using vinegar and see if the stink goes away.

  3. Add 1/2 cup lemon juice in the wash cycle

  4. Try getting a Water Softening Tank which you can connect to the main water supply of your house. And you can use this for the whole household of dish washing and also shinier hair.

  5. Try to use a little more detergent, but still not as much as compare to normal washing. Explore a little to find out what suits the best in your water hardness level.

  6. If all this fail, you may need to strip wash more often as compare to places with soft water. Strip washing starts with brushing with soft toothbrush on the diaper using dish washing detergent and hot/warm water from the shower. Brush the diaper in and out, i.e. on the fleece side. Then rinse through the diaper with running water or tumble it with washing machine until the suds is gone.
